For these four grades, students engage in play-based learning activities, whether they are using a creative curriculum or beginning a literacy-focused curriculum like the Teachers College of Reading and Writing . Children learn to approach numeracy and science through planned play and experiential learning, while also integrating the Georgia Mathematics curriculum which uses games, partner work, and collaboration to teach key numeracy skills. A child’s cerebral development begins in utero, and their development in the first eight years of life establishes the foundation for future health and well-being.

North Seattle College offers common courses in Early Childhood Education that can be transferred to other two-year schools. For children who do have access, poorly trained educators, overcrowded and unstimulating environments, and unsuitable curricula diminish the quality of their experiences. Kindergarten focuses heavily on social development and peer-to-peer interactions, though there is greater emphasis on fundamental academics than there is in preschool. In preschool children learn how to count, but in kindergarten they begin learning about adding and subtracting. And whereas in preschool they learned the alphabet, kindergarten teaches them how to spell and string basic words into simple sentences.

From on-campus labs to community learning opportunities, the early childhood education program gives students a chance to practice and analyze their emerging skills. Students take their skills to real early childhood education settings, earning real world experiences with children, community members, and current educators. This program includes various service learning experiences, providing students with a sense of community. Despite the long-term benefits of early childhood education and widespread public support for ECE programs, many children lack access to integrated, inclusive early learning experiences before kindergarten.

Research shows that the level of reflective abstraction achieved by young children was found to limit the degree to which they could represent physical quantities with written numerals. Piaget held that children can invent their own procedures for the four arithmetical operations, without being taught any conventional rules.
